Hello!

New year means new art to us! We’ll be steadily stocking the bird mafia etsy shop with lots of cut paper shadow boxes, 2d cut paper pieces and some new printed items throughout the spring (and the rest of the year!) We’ll have some dates for spring shows in the next couple of months and (hopefully) some very big news.

Lastly – This is the BEST time of year to order your custom shadow boxes! Want an awesome birthday gift? A unique wedding gift? Art for a nursery? A present for yourself? Contact me and we can come up for an original cut paper shadow box perfect for any space/person(s)!

Our journey:

Three years ago this month, I set out to reorganize my ideas. I knew a few things for certain: I loved cutting paper, I loved sewing and I loved putting these passions together. But for all my longing, I had spend years not quite combining them in the way I dreamed. I decided it was time to start something based around this philosophy. It was time to share this dream as both artist and crafter.

Since I started with a mission, the next step was to name this project. I had just finished a series of bird cuts that I had titled, the bird mob. Over the years before I had been called “the girl who cuts birds” (Disclaimer: Papercuts of birds. Bird mafia does not promote the mutilation of any animals, especially birds.) So I thought maybe I was on to something. Soon in a letter to a pen-pal, I shared my ideas. She promptly informed me that “bird mafia” sounded more bad-ass. I agreed.

Since then I’ve had the pleasure of taking bird mafia to some amazing west coast shows from Seattle to Los Angeles. We’ve sent our cut paper designs all over the world and connected with some fantastic stores in Singapore, Australia, Poland, Canada, Japan, the UK and across the states. We owe this reach almost entirely to Etsy, a place for creative people to show what they can do and to share their dreams with the world.

But mostly, on our shop’s third birthday, we’d like to thank every one of our lovely customers and fans! The past three years wouldn’t have been such an amazing ride without you (and here’s to the next three!)

The ninth month

The summer is nearing it’s end…

But I love September mostly because it means fall is almost here!

We are excited about what this month (and the rest of 2012) holds for us. This month will mark the third year of our etsy shop (look out for some deals on our shop anniversary on September 30th!) We’ve also listed some new items…

New this season :

A little dose of whimsy.

Some new owls (we are the bird mafia after all)… including this large flying barn owl stuffie!

And some new art pieces, including this cut paper shadow box backed with a lovely vintage map of vancouver, wa.

And this one…. plus many more now and to come.

RECAP! Renegade West Coast.

First off, I have to thank everyone who came out to Renegade SF and LA. The attendees definitely made these shows some of the best I have done.

We kicked things off with Renegade in SF the second to last weekend of July. Our neighbors were fun, Fort Mason was packed and the crowd was amazing!

I decided to demo my paper-cutting for these shows to give people a better idea of that I do. The response was awesome!

Then it was was time to head south for my first Southern California show ever! And Renegade LA was definitely a change from SF. It was outside, sunny, and warm (in fact, a LOT warmer then I am used to!)

But we had a lot of fun with the people who braved the heat to come check things out and our neighbor vendors all the way from Kansas City, Let’s Be Friends. (She makes amazing plush woodland monsters, hipster bears and her illustrations are as beautiful as her sewn creations!)

(Just like in SF, I decided to cut paper at my table in LA. This is the main piece I was working on that weekend (between water breaks and conversations). )

And we were excited to see photos of the bird mafia booth Saturday night on the LA Times “picks from the modern crafts fair.”

This week we’ve made it back into the studio and I am getting ready for a major art upload in the bird mafia etsy shop on August 22nd, so be on the lookout!

Spring update and awesome deals!

It’s already been a busy year for the bird mafia. This month we attended Urban Air Market in the streets of San Francisco, then we ventured to the Pacific Northwest on a beautiful weekend for Crafty Wonderland in Portland, and finished our run of three shows in 2 weeks vending with Bazaar Bizarre at Maker Faire in San Mateo, Ca.

We met some great people (including some artists I have admired for years!) Now we’re gearing up for a summer full of fun, including: Indie Mart, design week pop-up show in SF, Renegade LA (our first southern Ca show), Renegade SF, some exciting new projects, fun new paper cut art and designs and of course ADVENTURE!

To kick things off, I just listed some pillow + stuffie deals in the bird mafia etsy shop! Get these coordinating items together and save. Add a touch of color to finish off your spring cleaning or to brighten things up for summer!

This past week we had our spring shoot with the lovely Jennifer Hogan of ever whim photographs. We love her and her work (check it out at everwhim.com). We still have some work ahead of us, but our spring designs are well on their way to being ready and March is very quickly approaching.

To celebrate the nearing release of our new season of designs and give you a little taste of the theme of the year, I have listed some small works of art on the etsy shop!
